Web Tools That Work for You

At KEEN Creative we are always trying to find creative and efficient ways to improve our workflow. It could be as simple as keeping your desk organized, using applications or web tools that enhance productivity, or as a web developer, building one yourself.

Every website is always different in some variation, but it is important to start your website right. When I work on a WordPress website there is always something that I pick up on and learn during my development process that I apply to my next project. When creating a WordPress website you will have to setup your initial theme with the specific website details, and this is done with every website. Over time I learned the best way to approach the initial stages of development is to carefully review the design files and gather the proper information before setting up a WordPress theme.

During my design review I gather:

  • the template name
  • screenshot of the theme
  • favicon of the website
  • font types
  • font sizes
  • the colour palette
  • icons, and
  • functionality components such as maps or gallery sliders

Enter the theme details.

It is important to have a good overview of the website so that you know how to approach the initial theme setup. Think of it this way, when you’re going to travel from one point to another it is always better to map out your destination and learn a bit about it before you continue on your journey. Understanding the obstacles that you might face ahead of time will help you determine how to approach the initial setup, so that you don’t have to spend time making detours or backtracks half way through your journey.

The details of the design files that I mentioned earlier are always different with every website, and those components will have to be edited with every WordPress theme we set up. That said, it can get pretty repetitive and instead of going into different parts of the theme and making those initial edits, we can fill them out on a form, submit it, and it will populate all of the details and generate a theme folder for that specific website for us. Using this process will help with the initial setup of the theme and from there on we can start building the various templates that the theme is composed of.

When creating WordPress themes, this functionality is only a small part of my development workflow, but every bit helps me be more efficient. It’s not pretty, but it gets the job done.
